Distorted Mind
According to Buddhist philosophy,
happiness is the result of an enlightened mind,
whereas suffering is caused by a distorted mind.
This is very important.
A distorted mind,
in contrast to an enlightened mind,
is one that is not in tune with reality.

How enlightened does one need to be before they can realize that they're, in fact, distorted? :)

I think one has to be pretty far along in the process actually. Most of us don't recognize our distortion. Some of us recognize our distortion sometimes, but not all the time. Very few are constantly aware of their distortion.
